BI6.1-3 | Introduction to Extracellular Matrix
Learning Objectives
- Describe the composition and structural organisation of the extracellular matrix (ECM)
- Explain the synthesis, assembly, and types of collagen with their tissue-specific distributions
- Describe disorders caused by collagen gene mutations (Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos) and vitamin C deficiency (scurvy)
- Explain the structure and functions of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans in the ECM
- Correlate ECM components with clinical conditions: wound healing, joint diseases, and connective tissue disorders
INSTRUCTIONS
Work through each section in sequence. Pay close attention to the collagen synthesis pathway — it is a common examination topic and has multiple clinical correlation points. Estimated time: 45 minutes.
